A Collection of 18th-Century Decorated Papers and Paper Bindings
The Dard Hunter and Dard Hunter Jr. Collection of Decorated Paper Bindings
Dard Hunter is widely recognized for his research on historical paper-making methods, along with his contributions to the American Arts and Crafts movement. His collection of decorated paper samples, bindings, photographs, and notes focuses on "early American" decorated book papers, mostly those associated with German-American imprints in the 18th and early 19th centuries. This collection is held by The Huntington: pictured here are printed and manuscript books with decorated paper bindings, while a sample book of 400+ Guiseppe Rizzi papers is viewable through the Huntington Digital Library. A large archive collection of more than 500 photographs and decorated paper samples is currently being processed.
