An otherwise identical pattern with a blue key impression is shown in Heijbroek and Greven's "Sierpapier", p. 65.
The book is covered with a tanned leather (probably horse or calf) which has been artificially grained with a pebbly texture to resemble shagreen, a rawhide material historically made from the skin of rayfish and sharks.
