Collector's Notes:

The decorated paper is heavily worn and pest-damaged—in some places difficult to tell whether the it goes over or under the quarter parchment. Also notable is the seam bisecting the height of the binding, suggesting multiple pieces of cartonnage were laminated to build the covering to the appropriate size.

This book is a manuscript record of masses and bequests made to a specific church in memoriam of Marcantonio Calvucci, with records dating 1813–1858. While genealogical research is by no means my forte, I was only able to find a single reference to a modern place called “Boccabianca”: an eponymous villa in Cupra Marittima. Settled as early as the 8th century BC, and then a Roman colony, the historical fishing village is nestled between the coast and three large hills—Sant’Andrea, Marano, and Boccabianca—which apparently alternated as the major settlements of the area during medieval conquests. A number of active churches exist nearby… perhaps one of these is the “chiesa rurale” in reference.
