Collector's Notes:
Dating is approximate based on stylistic elements, especially the large, ornate motifs mimicking printed textiles and the undecorated spaces of the design filled in with a dotted or hashed field—both characteristic to kattunpapier. Two separate portions of this design are reproduced in Kopylov’s Françaises—#53 p. 131, #169 p. 341—as distinct samples, the former as a tentatively Lyonnaise product. This sheet demonstrates their shared origin, wherever that might be.
An attribution in the bottom line of the border reads “N. 113” with a backwards letter N. This seems to have been a common mistake rather than an aesthetic choice by a particular maker… several papers in Françaises with various full attributions include a similar character.
